We had a good experience and time with the staff. Dr. Smith is very kind. We took our Hedge Hog,Quilly,because she had cut her 3rd eyelid,and her eye was bulging. We also noticed she had a spot on her chin that was swollen and losing hair. Quilly was given to us by some friends who could not keep her anymore,and she was given to them before us,so we only had an estimate on her actual age,which was 4.5 years old. She did not seem to be socialized very well as she was very «spicy» and unless it were me holding her (that still took five months),she would immediately ball up and hiss and huff. Dr. Smith put Quilly on an NSAID and eye drops.
We also discovered she had a growth on her lady bits. Dr. Smith was then concerned that the eye was just a symptom of a much more severe issue. We watched the eye and other issues for two weeks while we did eye drops and the NSAID,the swelling went down a bit,but the eye would not heal. When we went back in for a reevaluation,it was decided to remove her eye and remove the growth on her lady bits. Losing an eye would not be fun for her,but better than dealing with the constant pain and the other growth was getting to the point of obstructing her ability to go pee. I dropped her off around 7:45 am and got a call around 12 or so,letting me know the eye was swollen due to a growth in her skull pushing out her little eyeball. So,they wanted to call to get approval to send that growth off for pathology for $110.
We are off the phone for about 3 or 4 minutes,and they call back—this time,with not-so-great news. The growth behind her eye was much more significant and deemed cancerous and a severe case. Dr. Smith was concerned she would not make a long-term recovery because the growth went back into her skull and around her face. The nurse explained this,live during the procedure,and passed the messages along as Dr. Smith was operating,Quilly coded. The staff worked hard brought her back,but she was still heavily sedated. I had to make a hard choice right then and there. Her recovery would have been hard,if even possible,and the growth was taking over her whole head. So,Quilly was laid to rest on that table to keep her from suffering anymore. This was on a Friday; my wife is a school teacher and had already had a tough week. The plan was for her to swing by and pick up Quilly after work. There was no way I would give my wife the bad news while at work or stress her out. So,I sent her a text and told her they were wrapping up with Quilly faster than expected and not worrying about going by to get her. I was going to swing by before getting our daughter from school. I sat on my living room floor and cried,yeah,I cried. I was trying to process it all,and then I got a text from my wife about 45 minutes later. It simply said,«I am having her cremated and picking up the ashes Monday». Dr. Smith called my wife instead of me to ask if she had any questions about why she passed. I 100% understand the thought process,as Nicole was the first person to drop her off the previous month,and my wife had been the one texting with her during that process. It just really sucked that that’s how my wife found out. Now,Dr. Smith is fantastic and had the best intentions. I would recommend the staff notate who they spoke to when they called,and DR. Smith was in surgery,so this type of thing doesn’t happen. We will be moving all our animal care over there,and think the staff is all very kind. Mixups happen,and Dr. Smith seems like a genuinely kind person.

Dr. Smith is so knowledgeable and helpful. She carefully explained everything about our first puppy visit and gave me so much helpful information!! And she’s gentle and fun-loving. I’m bringing my 37-year-old parrot there next week!

The only vet in the Area that would help us without waiting 5+ hours unfortunately our fur baby passed away due to his illness but the staff at VCA was by far the kindest and most professional people we could work with! They had answers immediatly and helped us make the right decision highly recommend VCA in rockwall ❤️❤️
