I wish I didn’t have to give any stars at all,but I have to in order to share my experience. I have had my dog Meika since May 2010. In November of 2021,my sweet girl was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer,osteosarcoma. By the time it’s found,it’s generally too late. I chose to keep my baby girl happy,healthy,and as much out of pain as I could with the backing of AMAZING vets and staff at Maplewood Aninal Clinic who gave me so much extra time with her. Fast forward to this weekend where my sweet old girl quickly deteriorated. I am an RN and after working 12.5 hours yesterday and driving the hour home,I found my sweet beautiful girl lying on her bed being loved on by my boyfriend. I got close to her and found her primary mass had ruptured sometime in the day meaning we would no longer be able to wait to get her to Maplewood. The closest 24 hour vet was VCA so we made the call no pet owner wants to make. We drove the 50 minutes back to that office only to be met with judgment and a misunderstanding of why we even arrived at their facility at 10:40 pm. I explained to them multiple times I had cash,that we needed to help her cross the rainbow bridge,and that I could pay for the services we were seeking. I was met with “well,you’ll have to pay up front.” Finally,two people came out to “triage” my beautiful dying dog saying “we wanted to see if this was truly emergent or if she could be seen tomorrow by her primary.” I was blown away. As a seasoned ER nurse in a level 1 trauma facility,I know very well how triage works. I ALSO know that we don’t turn people away or ask them how they are going to pay for services when they walk in through our doors. What I never stated was that we were there for treatment and in that moment,it felt like no one was listening to me. It felt like the black mascara tear stains on my cheeks went completely unnoticed. I had more than enough resources to pay for the services we were seeking for my sweet Meika and I was asking for their help in a death with dignity. The vet was truly the only person who showed us any kindness as she helped Meika pass comfortably. I think the front desk worker was trying to get the “people on the back end” to understand when he called them about registering our dog,but I was in so much shock about our terrible treatment,I can’t really be sure. This is why I hope to never have to use their services ever again. Such a heartbreaking moment in my Meika’s life and our family was shown so little compassion. I hope each and every person I came into contact with remembers our tears,remembers the judgment they placed on us as we were trying to get our sweet girl some relief,and I truly hope you never make anyone else feel the shame you placed on me last night.

Doctors are great!!! The Dr’s assistant and front desk clerks are rude and disrespectful every time I go,so 1 star for them and 4 stars to the Drs and 0 stars for the extraordinary HIGH cost. Before you respond,keep in mind there is no excuse for bad behavior,especially at the prices being charged,even for basic office visits. Instead,use this information in your next staff meeting to come up with a plan of action. My pup has been a patient at this facility since he was 9 weeks old and he is now 12 years old,and nothing has changed as far as attitude towards clients. The last time I came,I paid for intern training where the assistant was interrupting MY office visit with verbal training instructions. I don’t mind paying while training is going on,but you don’t have to make the training a priority when I am paying for it. Based on other similar comments,soft skill training is highly needed in this facility,easily found on Udemy or LinkedIn Learning.

I had to make the hard decision to put my dog Marble to sleep today after he was hospitalized and was not showing any improvement after coming home. Both myself and my dog were shown so much kindness and respect throughout the entire ordeal,and I feel that my dog received the best care he could have. Thank you so much to Dr. Hui,RVTs Andrea and Karen,and all of the front desk staff who made a really bad day just a little bit easier.
